The Rise and Fall of AfroBeat

L Like any music genre, is influenced by a multitude of factors including cultural shifts, socio-political dynamics, and changes in artistic trends. Afrobeat, a genre that originated in West Africa in the late 1960s and was popularized by Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, experienced significant growth and international recognition during its peak in the 1970s and 1980s. During this time, Fela Kuti's revolutionary lyrics, infectious rhythms, and fusion of traditional African music with jazz, funk, and highlife elements resonated with audiences around the world. Afrobeat became not only a genre of music but also a symbol of resistance against oppression and a platform for social and political commentary. However, Afrobeat's popularity waned in the following decades due to various factors. One significant factor was Fela Kuti's death in 1997, which marked the end of an era and led to a decline in mainstream attention towards Afrobeat. Additionally, the rise of other music genres a...

A WISE MAN ONCE SAID

1. Don’t call someone more than twice continuously. If they don’t pick up your call, presume they have something important to attend to; 2. Return money that you have borrowed even before the person that borrowed you remember or ask for it. It shows your integrity and character. Same goes with umbrellas, pens and lunch boxes. 3. Never order the expensive dish on the menu when someone is giving you a lunch/dinner. 4. Don’t ask awkward questions like ‘Oh so you aren’t married yet?’ Or ‘Don’t you have kids’ or ‘Why didn’t you buy a house?’ Or why don't you buy a car? For God’s sake it isn’t your problem; 5. Always open the door for the person coming behind you. It doesn’t matter if it is a guy or a girl, senior or junior. You don’t grow small by treating someone well in public; 6. If you take a taxi with a friend and he/she pays now, try paying next time; 7. Respect different shades of opinions. Remember what's 6 to you will appear 9 to someone facing you....

PEER PRESSURE & DRUGS

Positive peer pressure will almost always push a person to discover their capabilities and strengths. On the other hand, negative peer pressure can lead to habits that are both cyclical and damaging. Alcohol and drugs, for example, are usually used in group settings. Early drug abuse often includes tobacco, alcohol, inhalants, marijuana, and prescription drugs such as sleeping pills or anti-anxiety medications. The National Household Survey on Drug Abuse shows that abuse of drugs in late childhood and early adolescence is associated with long-term drug involvement. Avoiding substance abuse as young adults is paramount to preventing detrimental habits later in life.

Peer Pressure

A feeling that one must do the same things as other people of one's age and social group in order to be liked, feel among, accepted or respected by peer. Peer pressure can be a driving force in influencing decisions and habits, especially those related to alcohol and drugs. As substance abuse issues continue to soar nationwide, psychologists and drug treatment specialists continue to explore preventive care options. It means tackling the problem of peer pressure.   SIGNS Peer pressure can range from subtle to overt, which means that some forms of peer pressure can be easier to spot than others. Being able to identify signs that your child is dealing with peer pressure may help you initiate a supportive conversation. Avoiding school or other social situations Being very image-conscious Changes in behavior Expressing feeling like they don't fit in Low moods Making social comparisons Trying out clothes and hairstyle Misbehaving and wanting to be rude, ar...
My daughter is six years old and is in grade one. We live about a kilometer away from school so everyday okada man whom we are familiar with takes her to school and returns her home in the afternoon because both my husband and I are working and we leave home early, just after she goes to school. One day when I was at work I received a call from her class teacher requesting me to avail myself there as soon as was possible. “What happened to Angel?” I questioned anxiously. “Nothing to panic about, just make sure you come before we break up for the day.” Of course I panicked. This had to do with my daughter and I was worried sick about her. I immediately excused myself from work and hurriedly took the first transport available. I burst into the classroom panting and sweating. “Mama Angel,” The teacher started. “We will talk about this privately.” She led the way to an empty office and I followed meekly. “Do you see your child off when she comes to school?” Was her...

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍

A woman sent an anonymous question to me in a relationship talk session where I ministered recently on how her husband's siblings will come to her house and stay for days without helping her in any house chores.  They will eat and not pack their plates. They will expect her to put water in their bathroom for them to bath. They will dirty the sitting room and even their room and expect the wife to clean it up and arrange it well before they come back in the evening. One of them would use the toilet and expect the brother's wife to flush it for him. A guy of 22 years. A lot of women are passing through different kinds of hail in the hands of their so call in-laws and their husband wouldn't address it in their favor. Oga, your  wife don become your family slave?? Sir, in case you are reading this and your wife is going through this or similar in the hands of your siblings and you can't stop their stupid behaviors, hereby stressing your wife to please your family members, I...

THE EXIT BUTTON

"Social media? Its just a space were people have fun when they're bored; to some, its a business place". Yes, that's true but you have to be very careful where you are; what you do and who you make friends with both online and offline. The devil and his agents are everywhere entering into every time and space, looking for empty vessel to fill and possess. And with social media, he is dragging and luring many young people to himself. Discipline yourself and stand guard at the door of your heart. Don't follow everyone blindly. Be selective. There are pages you shouldn't like, groups you shouldn't belong to, except you're there as an ambassador of Christ, doing what your father did in the house of a tax collector. "Its just for fun", they will tell you but there is a hidden agenda, a device by the devil to destroy young minds. The devil is everywhere and he's not there for fun. He is earnestly doing something dangerous to the souls of men. D...

𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐋𝐋 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐎 𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐃𝐄𝐄𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄 𝐁𝐑𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑

You see that statement up there? That was what I told a daughter in the Lord yesterday.  Let me gist you about what led to that. She told me of how a deeper Life brother came to propose marriage to her and this deeper Life brother asked her to go and genuinely pray about his marriage proposal and get back to him. For the first time, this sister took to her kneel and sought the face of God in serious prayers about her marital life and also about the proposal of this deeper life brother. Heaven opened up on her and revelations and dreams and different convictions started pouring on her as to who to marry but unfortunately, God was not showing her anything about the deeper life brother. It was another brother in her church who has been asking her out for close to a year but never talked about marriage God was pointing her attention to. When she was sharing with me all her dreams, revelations and circumstantial confirmations God was giving her about the other brother she's to marry tho...

YOU MUST HAVE YOUR OWN FENCE TOO

When I was in secondary school, my school did not have a fence round the school apart from the one built in front for the gateman, others areas like the backside and the rest were left open. At that time, it was difficult to restrain the students from going out of the school compound. After the morning assembly, many students would walk out of the school compound, some would go back home, some would go to their friends house, some would go to play, some would come into the school through bush track etc. Many crimes were recorded & reported in our school then. The situation really got out of hand. To curb all these situations, our principal then (Mr Ekefre) did something! We got to the school one day & found out that, they have used white canvas like paint to draw a line round the school compound. On getting to the assembly ground, the principal came to address us and said, ' We now have a fence in this school. That white line you see is the school fence for now! Once y...

IT CAN'T STAY IN THE DREAM

This morning, I met two cute siblings with their parents at Goshen Voyage Park, etagbor, when I was trying to Waybill an item to Lagos in their office. The following conversation ensued between two of the siblings. Savior: Glory, you know what I saw in my dream last night? Glory: What did you see? Savior: I saw a big phone, very beautiful and big phone. Glory: So, where is the phone? Savior: It is still there in my dream. I burst into laughter. After I finished laughing, I got the message God was passing to me and someone reading this through that conversation. Are there not many of us who have seen great things in our dreams? Many have seen great cars, seen their wedding day, seen themselves abroad, seen their admission letter, promotion letter, many have seen themselves pregnant and even breastfeeding a baby, many have seen themselves ministering to a large audience, etc. Yet, if you ask them where is the ' big and beautiful phone?'....

THE FAST CHRISTIANTY BROUHAHA

Fast Christianity like fast food has its advantages and disadvantages or pros and cons. Originally, the word “fast” is supposed to mean “speed” which is not a bad quality but in this context, it is bad because it is bogus. It is more or less a shortcut and of course short cut will cut you short. You cannot run faster than your legs nor can you put the cart before the horse. Slow and steady is helpful to cooking and Christianity. Usually, processes are vital to the outcome of production and processes take the time or rather processes are timed. For example, in cooking, timing is important. The difference between good and bad food is timing. If you don't time your cooking properly your food will get burnt or half-cooked. But fast food makes a mockery of all these. It is food at the speed of light. In cities and towns fast foods is becoming popular because most of its patrons have little time for homemade food. So, ""fast" is the way to go for the modern man. It saves h...

𝐈 𝐃𝐈𝐃 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐃𝐈𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐃𝐀𝐘

A beloved sister met me yesterday after ministration in their assembly where I was invited for a relationship talk and counseling and was telling me how life was dealing with her. She was in deep depression and she attempted suicide. On the day she was to kill herself, she felt the urge to just talk to someone before she dies. She reached out to a sister who is her friend. She told that lady her many problems and how she's thinking of taking her life. That Friend encouraged her, prayed for her and even told her some things they can be doing together to bring her out of her depression. This sister talking with me said, the words of that sister pulled her out of that suicide attempt and she got hope that day not to kill herself.. She said, after that day, she called the other sister, but she refused picking her call. She did everything to get in touch with her to appreciate her and to follow up on those things she said they will be doing together to help her overcome depression...

SHAKE OFF THE DUST

Sometime ago, I discovered my shoe polish has finished. I needed to polish my shoes before going out. God so good, I saw one of this shoe makers that was going about hawking his business. I called him and gave him 3 of my shoes to polish for me. He did the 3 well, very shining. I put on one and kept the other two shoes somewhere in the room. On a Sunday, I decided to put on the last shoe to church. I discovered dust had settled on it. I was like, this shoes that was shining like crystal sea that day. Dust has now covered it as if it was never polished at all. I felt for that shoes . It happened like that to that shoe because I did not use it. Dust covered it because I did not put it on for days.. Friends, that's how it is in our lives. Any gift, potential, grace, ministry, power, etc. no matter how polished they might be in our lives, when we don't put them to constant use, 'dust' will settle on them! There are people going about with gift, ministry, power, pote...

𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐋𝐄 𝐋𝐀𝐃𝐈𝐄𝐒, 𝐏𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄 𝐃𝐎𝐍'𝐓 𝐋𝐀𝐔𝐆𝐇 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒

J ust yesterday, I met a long time friend of mine who is now a pastor. As we discussed a length, he also shared his proposal experience after telling him my proposal story how I was turned down by ladies in my church due to financial instability then. 𝐇𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 , 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫 , 𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐫 . 𝐇𝐞 said, when he finished proposing to the lady, she just started laughing. For more than 5 mins, she kept on laughing at this pastor. The pastor told me how he started checking himself up and down to be sure he did not poo on his body. She laughed at him mockingly and she just left him there and she walked away. The pastor told us that, after he became a pastor and went back to that church to serve, the father of that lady was one of the people that gave him so much honor. H...

THE COMPLETE BEAUTY OF A WOMAN

Women are really beautiful creatures. In every culture women are beautified. In precolonial African societies women were well groomed. The Fattening Rooms were the beauty salons where women were made curvy and their skins pampered with palm kernel oils. They were also lectured on the etiquette of femininity. Contemporary women go a long way to look glam and fab. Most women today are truly beautiful. Time and money is devoted to be beautiful. It's a beauty regimen from hair to toes. Women of today spend a fortune on hair care. Braiding of all types, perming, fixing of weavons, and wigs are deployed by the womenfolk to look enchanting and endearing. The face is the focus of most women and no expense is spared to achieve amazing facial. There are professional make up artists who can transform a plain looking woman to a beauty queen. The majority of women keep a make up kit in their bags that contain a cornucopia of brushes, foundation powder, mirror, eye pencil, lip sticks, concealers...

ACCESS AND ASSESS YOUR MOTIVES

Why are my prayers not answered? Why are my wishes not come true? Why are my children's friends and mates all married and I'm the only one left? Why are my mate driving in their cars while I can't even buy a motorcycle for myself? If these are similar to your thoughts, it is time to ACCESS and ASSESS the MOTIVES behind your desires.  Often times we desire things not out of need but just to show off and to prove to our friends that we've arrived? This kind of mind set pushes us into something and situation that will make us regret later in life. Many people today are stuck and in the middle of now where maybe in a relationship, marriage, career etc because of wrong motives.  Wrong motives may prevent you from achieving your purpose and success in life. It may feel good initially for your desires to come true, but later on it may turns disastrous. Therefore, before you desire and want something, ACCESS the MOTIVES behind your wants.  It is good to get married, own a car, ...

WHAT COOKING WITH FIRE WOOD TAUGHT ME ABOUT MY VISION

When I was growing up as a young boy, we cooked with fire wood because there was no money for gas cooker due to the level of poverty in the days of poverty. There is something I learnt from that experience of cooking with fire wood. When you set the fire woods in-between the 3 blocks you are using. There is no kerosene to pour on the woods that will make it catch fire on time. So, sometimes, you will lit the fire with the match stick& have to put the small fire on a broken plastic, it is after the broken plastic has caught the fire that you will now put the fire beside one of the woods, then that wood will catch fire& the fire will spread from one wood to another wood and to another wood until you have real fire and flames. One skill you need to master in doing that, is the ability to protect breeze from putting off the small fire on your match stick till the plastic will catch the fire and a wood will catch it from the plastic. There are times that, you might have only 1 or 2 ...

MY DAD COULDN'T READ BIBLE AGAIN

3 years before my father died, I visited to greet him & we were gisting. I knew it has been long he read his Bible last because of old age and the dimness of his eyes. I carried his big Bible for him and gave him his glasses. He tried reading it, but he could not see the wordings well. He tried pronouncing those words, but it wasn't coherent as he could not see it well. Humm. This is a man that read Bible like anything. He taught me the value of the word of God. He told me he read the Bible through Genesis to Revelation 2 times. With that challenge, I have read the Bible through 2 times too and still on the third time. My dad did quotes scriptures off hands. I learnt that value from him too. I memories scriptures and can quote it by God's grace. It is this same man then that old age did not permit him to read the Bible again. He told me jokingly that, the ones he has read right from his youth age are still in him and they will sustain him now till he would breath his last. ...

DEVELOPING INTIMACY IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP

There are six external activities that can help you build a strong intimacy in your relationship and marriage. #1. Laughing Together: Laughter is a doorway to intimacy. It is like an instant vacation in a marriage and the best way to keep perspective when things go wrong. If you laugh together, you can cry together, and thereby feel more ready to trust each other when communicating feelings. If you can find humor in everything, you can survive anything. Do not take things so seriously. Learn to stop yourself when you are ready to get angry and instead use the love language of laughter. If this is your behavior at home, then you can take this behavior on the road through phone calls and little creative things you can do while you are away. #2. Encouraging Each Other: Become each other’s cheerleader. Learn how to encourage and support your spouse’s activities. Listen and really take an interest in the things your spouse likes to do. Express respect for your husband. Every chance ...
